Getting Started in Vespera

A first-session route from character create to a stable idle loop after 1.0.

Getting Started

Vespera is a one-character idle RPG. You are not rolling a party of alts to cover every skill. The first hour should produce a class you enjoy clicking, a HUD you understand, and auto settings that keep fighting while you make coffee. This page is that hour. Pair it with the class tier list if you are still staring at four portraits, with Loop-Fight controls as soon as the tutorial lets you touch automation, and with combat and offline before a long idle night.

What you bought

Idle Gamers shipped Vespera 1.0 on Steam on 4 September 2026 after Early Access on 21 July 2026. It is a Windows purchase with Steam Cloud, achievements, and no microtransactions on the store page. Minimum spec is modest: 64-bit Windows 10, 4 GB RAM, an older i3 or FX CPU, and a GT 630-class GPU. Mouse is required. Steam Deck is listed as Playable. Some images and names are AI generated; the store discloses that before you pay.

The loop is simple to say and easy to drown in: fight, gather, craft, study at the Magic Academy, hire mercenaries, then feed the same character into dungeons, Tower, Spire, Frontier, and faction Titans. Your job on day one is to start the loop, not to finish it.

Pick a class you will still like at hour twenty

There are four classes, and each later unlocks three subclasses with a full talent tree. Official identities:

  • Barbarian — melee, bleeds, executions, battle shields. Subclass tabs include Bloodreaver, Axemaster, and Ironbreaker.
  • Arcanist — spells, burns, freezes, mana barriers.
  • Warden — ranged combat, traps, poison, precision strikes. Farwatch Lens is a Dexterity buff you will meet later; patch notes also mention Moonleaf Brand as the competing option.
  • Nightblade — daggers, poison stacks, crits, dodge.

You do not need the “best” class to leave the first hunt. You need a resource meter you understand. Barbarian and Nightblade are the most obvious if you like watching a health bar melt. Arcanist asks you to respect mana and potion thresholds. Warden rewards positioning and trap timing even on auto. Read the dedicated pages — Barbarian, Arcanist, Warden, Nightblade — then commit. Respec culture exists through talent and gear swaps, but your first hours are cheaper if you stop rerolling portraits.

First hunt checklist

  1. Finish the onboarding fights without turning every slider on. Watch what your class actually spends: rage-style meters, mana, or combo windows.
  2. Open Loop-Fight (the old Auto-Combat name), auto-cast, and auto-heal. Set a mana or health threshold you can afford. The switchboard is controls; the overnight math is on the idle combat guide.
  3. Start one gathering action — wood or ore is enough. Combat and gathering can run together; that is the point of the design.
  4. Recruit the first mercenary the game offers. One fights beside you. Extra hires go on expeditions.
  5. Do not dump every gold pile into cosmetic avatars or deep Academy tiers. Buy food, potions, and the next weapon rank you can actually equip.

The campaign runs from that first hunt toward the Frontier beyond Vesper Gate. Treat story zones as a loot and XP spine, not as a speedrun. If a pack deletes you, lower the area, raise food quality, or check whether auto-cast is firing the wrong skill.

HUD habits that save hours

Vespera shows enemy loot tables and known item sources in-game. Use that instead of guessing. The same honesty applies to drop rates — the store copy says they are visible. When a tooltip lists a crystal, engraving, or Soulbound drop, write the source down or pin it in your head. The gear and gems page is a wiki-side checklist for sockets, element crystals, and Divine salvage later.

Learn the difference between Combat XP and Resilience XP early. Combat level is your build’s backbone. Resilience shows up as you repeat dangerous content. Element crystals drop from enemies and bosses and feed six element trees. You do not need to max a tree on day one; you need to stop vendoring crystals by accident.

What to ignore until the campaign breathes

Skip paid Spire attempts until auto-combat is stable. Skip Nightmare dungeons until you can clear the normal version without burning your entire potion stack. Skip Frontier region seals until you have a mercenary and a food pipeline — details on the Frontier page. World bosses rotate on a schedule (the store copy cites a three-day cadence for the call); join when you can donate to the War Chest, but do not panic if the first Titan happens while you are still learning the forge.

Magic Academy is your town. Open it, start a cheap study, and leave. The Magic Academy guide covers Bestiary research, Mastery pips, and Mana Well refunds. The gathering guide stays on nodes, leather, and the forge.

Controls and Steam Deck

Keyboard-and-mouse is the intended setup. Patch notes mention localized key labels and a mouse-only option in accessibility. If you play on Deck, keep the official Playable rating in mind: expect mouse emulation rather than a bespoke gamepad redesign. Pause Spire auto-advance before you dock if you do not want a Tarot choice made while the handheld sleeps.

After the first session

Log out only after you have: a class, food in the bag, auto-heal on, one gathering skill running, and a mercenary assigned. Next time, push campaign until a dungeon icon appears, then read dungeons. When the Tower unlocks, read Tower and Spire before you Reclaim a hundred floors in a panic. Check Patch 1.0 if character load times after a long idle night look wrong.

Official talk happens on Steam news and Discord; both are listed on links. This wiki is unofficial. When in-game text and a page disagree, trust the client.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers players search after the Vespera 1.0 launch.

Can I reroll my Vespera class later?

You play one long-lived character. Subclasses, talents, gems, and gear are the intended flexibility. Pick a fantasy you like from the tier list instead of restarting every night.

Should I gather during the tutorial?

Yes. Combat and gathering run in parallel. Start a cheap node as soon as the gathering guide loop is unlocked so the forge is not empty when you need food.

Is Vespera free to play?

No. It is a one-time Steam purchase. The store lists no microtransactions. Introductory discounts can apply around launch; check the live Steam page.

What if offline rewards look wrong after 1.0?

Launch QoL targeted long idle settlement. Confirm auto settings on the combat page, then read Patch 1.0 and Steam news before assuming a wipe.
